The original Sea World Ski Show holds a special place in the memories of Gold Coasters, for many it marked their debut into a theme park. The show was one of the must-see attractions at Sea World from the 1970s right up until it’s closure in the early 2000s. It was the highlight of any Gold Coast holiday and crowds flocked to the park to see the best skiing action, tricks and stunts unfold right before their eyes on the iconic lake.

Not only was it a memorable experience for guests to the park but the skiers themselves were considered celebrities on the Gold Coast. It was the dream-job with skiers from around the country auditioning to be a part of the show and if lucky enough to make it, there was no bigger joy than sliding into a wetsuit and getting out onto the lake to lap-up the attention and hear the audacious applause from guests.

Well as the saying goes, what’s old will be new again, and Sea World has gone back to their roots with the launch of the new Thunder Lake Stunt Show which is being described as an evolution of the old ski shows. The Thunder Lake Stunt Show does a stellar job in mixing the modern with the traditional in an action-packed, adrenaline-driven adventure which appeals to the whole family and has a uniquely nostalgic feel sure to send tingles down the spines.

The 20-minute show centres around two rival groups, the Sun State All Stars and the Bay City River Rats as they compete in a showdown of extreme stunts to once and for all decide who rules the lake. At the centre-piece of the fast paced and visually spectacular show are some of the best water-ski, jet-ski and BMX performers in the country, with their stunts leaving guests on the edge of their sets as they fly and soar through the water and land in a series of ‘WOW’ moments.

For Thunder Lake Stunt Show, Sea World has partnered with Australia’s leading stunt crew, Showtime FMX which itself features a nice link back to the old ski show, with founding director Gary Reid starting his career in the stunt industry as a skier at Sea World in the 1990s. As a kid Gary saw the Ski Show and it had an immediate effect on him with the youngsters making it his ambition to not only ski in the show but to one day have his own show play-out on the lake, something he can now tick off the list.

The team have gone all-out on the show with a complete transformation of the set including the middle Island of the lake playing the back-drop to the battle between the two sides with the Rat House for the Bay City River Rats and Thunder Lake diner for the All Stars. The show also features an impressive array of unique and interesting vehicles including a Malibu speed-boat, Hot-Rod, Mustang and two very iconic and custom-built designs in the form of a Floating Truck and Harley-Davidson inspired jet-ski.

The reactions to the shows have been hugely positive with guests loving the throwback scenes with barefoot skiing and wakeboarding getting rave reviews. The Thunder Lake Stunt Show is on twice a day at 1.30pm and 4.15pm. It has quickly become a must-do for any visit to the Gold Coast and will hopefully spark a new generation of theme park lovers and celebrity athletes.
