6 of the World’s Best HyperCoasters | Village Roadshow Theme Parks

“What exactly is a HyperCoaster?”. It’s a question we’ve been asked often here at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast, following the 2017 launch of our latest and greatest ride — DC Rivals HyperCoaster.

Put simply, a HyperCoaster is any full-circuit roller coaster with a height measuring 61 metres or over. It’s like taking a regular roller coaster and seriously supercharging it.

These man-made monsters have taken thrills to the next level, and if you’re yet to experience one… what are you waiting for?! Introducing you to six of the world’s top HyperCoasters:

DC Rivals HyperCoaster: Warner Bros. Movie World

Taking out the number one position is, of course, Movie World’s very own HyperCoaster — the tallest, longest and fastest in the Southern Hemisphere. DC Rivals HyperCoaster has been delighting guests since launching in late 2017.

Themed around the greatest rivalries of all time between DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains, riders board the sleek batmobile-inspired train before cruising up the 61.6-metre lift hill, travelling through the Joker’s lair and plunging down a breathtaking 89-degree drop.

Hitting a max speed of 115km/h, riders then fly over a giant airtime-inducing camelback hill and come face-to-face with Australia’s first and only non-inverted loop. Extreme twists, turns, dives and a series of laugh-out-loud bunny hills that lift riders out of their seats play out over the rest of the 1.4-kilometre bright fuschia track.

And in a world-first train design you can do it all in reverse on two special backwards-facing seats, if you dare! DC Rivals HyperCoaster is more than a must-see on the Gold Coast, it’s a must-ride!

Magnum XL-200: Cedar Point

This beast is the one that started it all, introducing the world to the magic of HyperCoasters.

As the first coaster to crack the 60-metre mark, Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio set a new standard for world-class thrills.

This classic HyperCoaster reaches top speeds of 115km/h while plunging down mega drops and over airtime hills, racing through tunnels, and careening around a sweeping turn before hitting a final series of bunny hills.

While coaster technology may have come a long way since Magnum first debuted, it no doubt leaves a theme park legacy that cannot be ignored.

Steel Vengeance: Cedar Point

Putting a whole new twist on the HyperCoaster experience, Steel Vengeance, also located at Cedar Point, is referred to as a hyper-hybrid — a wicked combination of steel track on traditional wooden coaster supports. Towering over 60 metres high, you’ve never seen a ‘wooden’ coaster quite like this.

Around the world, wooden roller coasters continue to be a popular option for parks looking to deliver a mix of traditional and next-level thrills to their guests. And with the hybrid steel-on-wood technology, these coasters now deliver elements that were not even conceivable in years gone by.

Without doubt the most striking part of Steel Vengeance is its skyline-dominating lift hill and first drop — a giant intricate grid of wooden support beams capped with a sleek steel track with a dramatic 90-degree drop and over 2.7kms of stomach-turning track.

Mako: SeaWorld (Orlando)

Located at SeaWorld in Orlando Florida, not to be confused with Sea Word Gold Coast, Australia! Mako is named after one of the fastest sharks in the ocean. And with a top speed of 117km/h, this HyperCoaster certainly lives up to its namesake!

Carrying on the nautical theme, the ride’s station is themed to a shipwreck and the ride experience is designed to mimic the actions of a shark hunting its prey, complete with visual and sound effects.

Unique features include a hammerhead turn — a super-tight banked turn to the right.

A sustained sense of weightlessness is one of the main highlights of Mako, with a number of airtime hills rounding out the fun.

Superman The Ride: Six Flags New England

Built by the same renowned Swiss manufacturer as Movie World’s own crowd-favourite Superman Escape, this Superman is located at Six Flags New England and originally opened in 2000.

For a period of time the ride also featured a virtual reality experience, similar to Movie World’s own awesome Arkham Asylum VR.

The 63-metre high lift hill sets the scene for an intense 124km/h journey through a headchopper tunnel filled with fog, over giant hills, around a 120-degree overbanked turn, and through two wild helix elements.

A second fogged tunnel and a series of bunny hills are the icing on the super-hero cake.

There’s no doubt that Superman, the man of steel, has delivered again!

Behemoth: Canada’s Wonderland

Canada’s Wonderland is home to a HyperCoaster the park refers to as a ‘monstrous creature’ named Behemoth.

The first drop is truly something to behold with a 75-degree descent reaching speeds of up to 125km/h in only 3.9 seconds.

But it’s the five massive airtime hills that are the highlight of this steel creature, giving riders that much-craved sense of weightlessness.

A 180-degree hammerhead turn, 540-degree downward helix and 270-degree upward helix make up the grand finale of this monster Hyper.

Hopefully after reading this list you’re craving the speed and thrills that only a HyperCoaster can deliver. With one of the world’s most acclaimed new HyperCoasters now calling Warner Bros. Movie World home, you’ve got no excuse not to ride!
